Harold A. Polhmann

T/5 Harold A. Pohlmann

T/5 Harold A. Pohlmann, 26, was killed on June 21, in action on Biak island, northwest of New Guinea, the war department informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Pohlmann, who live three miles south of here. The sad information was received by them via telegram.
Harold, born 10/19/1917, e n t e re d service on June 6, 1941, and was sent overseas in April, 1942. He was sent to the South Pacific area where he had been since. He was never home on a furlough from the time he went into service.

Last summer he was recommended by both his regimental and battalion commander for his work in a wire laying detail while in New Guinea. The letters of commendation from both officers praised the work that Harold had done in laying wire "over miles of difficult terrain, across rivers, through swamps and over mountains, often in country where no trail existed, and under severe climatic hardships of rain and tropical heat."

Harold sent these letters home to his parents for safekeeping. Besides his parents, he is survived by one brother, Pvt. Harvey Pohlmann, who is stationed at Maxwell Field, Ala.

  1. Our church has a large King James Version of the Bible, which I found in a cabinet several years ago. I have read the Christmas story from that Bible every year for the last 18 years at Benediction Lutheran Church, Milwaukee. WI. No one knows how this Bible ended up at our church or who Mr. Pohlmann was until now.

The cover of the Bible has the following inscription:
    In Memory of Harold Pohlmann
who gave his life for his country
    June 21, 1944
